Ilja Karilampi creates colorful and thought-provoking installations that explore themes of identity, consumerism, and globalization. Through a process of ongoing aesthetic development related to music culture, he weaves a visually compelling narrative of glamorous social realism.
Via mediums such as colored vinyl, engraved aluminum, digital film, and sculptural gestures, Karilampi attempts to manifest our ever-streaming iconography into one coherent visual ecosystem. Ultimately, the appealing and conceptually rich works speak to our contemporary moment, and ask us to engage with the world around us in new and critical ways.
Ilja Karilampi (b. 1983, Gothenburg) is a Swedish multimedia artist based in Berlin. He studied at the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm (2009) before completing his master’s degree at Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main (2010). Recent solo exhibitions include StarTrak, curated by NSFW, Entrance Gallery, New York (2022); disco server, hFACTOR, Lagos, Nigeria (2021); Stockholm Art Week, curated by Saskia Neuman, Nitty Gritty, Stockholm (2021); Hur vi på olika sätt dras till varann, NSFW, Nordstan, Gothenburg (2021); and Narcotics, Temnikova & Kasela Gallery, Tallinn (2020). Karilampi has been commissioned for numerous public artworks around Sweden and his work has been shown widely in international exhibitions, notably including DYOR, Kunsthalle Zürich, Zürich (2022); Non-space, curated by Silvana Lagos, Revolver Galería, Lima (2020); ARS17, Kiasma, Helsinki (2017); Realness Respect, steirischer herbst, Graz (2012); The Chief Architect of Gangsta Rap, MoMA PS1, New York (2012); and based in Berlin, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2011).
