A graduate from the Royal College of Art’s Menswear MA programme, DaddyBears uses her knowledge of pattern cutting for garments to create three-dimensional objects away from the body. Typically using smooth and lustrous satins, she fashions sensuous and often large-scale fantasy sculptures, bringing a fresh take to traditional techniques that have rarely been seen manipulated in this way. The use of intense and repetitive hand sewing featured throughout her practice is a testament to ‘women’s work’ and a labour of love. These intimate techniques are used to help emote feelings of romance, escapism and humour.
Continuing to experiment with different mediums such as found object sculptures with miniatures, embroidery and textile installations, DaddyBears’s work also references ideas of transitional objects, childhood and adult forms of play, and nostalgia for obsessive toy collections. She is currently working towards creating larger scale immersive installations filled with her otherworldly creatures and structures.
DaddyBears (b. 1994, Bradford) is a British artist working with textile sculpture and installation. She received her MA in menswear design from the Royal College of Art, London (2017), and her BA in fashion design from Middlesex University, London (2015). DaddyBears was invited to take part in Palazzo Monti’s spring 2022 residency in Brescia, where she subsequently had her first duo show Can’t Stop Can’t Let Go (2022). Her work has also been shown in group shows at Asylum Studios, Suffolk (2020) and Bad Art Presents, London (2019).
